Stargazing Night

Our Y5 children were certainly in for a treat with the stargazing night held this week.

With the fire lit – ready to toast marshmallows and the telescopes at the ready, the children were in for an enjoyable evening.

Week beginning 29-1-18

Year 3

Next week we are looking forward to learning more about rocks and fossils. We will be carrying out an investigation to try and identify the different rock types, their properties and how they were formed. 

In maths our learning will focus on time. We will revise our time telling abilities and apply this to questions using timetables and differences.

Year 4

This week Year 4 will be learning to add and subtract fractions in mathematics including fractions with different denominators as a challenge. In science they will be studying states of matter and looking at the properties of solids, liquids and gases. In history Year 4 will be focusing on what the Romans did for us and the Celtic rebellion. Swimming for 4J is on Monday and PE for all Year 4 is on Wednesday.

Year 5

Next week in Year 5, our journey into space will continue with some fabulous opportunities to gaze into the galaxy.  On Monday we will be visiting the Inflativerse to study the constellations and learn the ancient stories behind their names.  We are also super excited about our Stargazing evening where we hope to witness a super moon.  Wrap up warm and prepare to be amazed!
 
In maths, we will be continuing to develop our understanding of perimeter, area and volume and the Times Table Rock star challenge will begin.  Make sure you practise this weekend.
 
In SPaG, we will be developing our use of punctuation, looking at commas for clarity and parenthesis. 

Year 6

Next week in maths we will be moving on to learning about measurements, including learning how to convert measures.  (both imperial and metric) Through our weekly arithmetic test, we will also be recapping the 4 operations and FDP facts.

During SFA lessons, we continue to show how creative we all are by planning and writing  a short narrative based on Harry Potter. We will also be learning how we can incorporate dialogue into our stories by using both direct and indirect speech.

As artists we will be refining our outstanding creations of Tudor/Harry Potter themed artwork. We will also be completing our design and technology projects based on creating the perfect wizard hat or the ultimate Tudor pouch.

– Practise your spellings and times tables in preparation for our weekly tests

– Recall all FDP facts

– PE kit should be in school on a Monday ready for our PE lesson on Thursday

– Remember to read often and complete your reading records

Things we are looking forward to:

– Learning more about Tudors/Henry VIII

– Working on our ‘Mission Impossibles’ in maths

– Presenting our D&T project

Curriculum Excitement

Curriculum Excitement

Our new projects are all now in full swing – with all of the children across school developing their knowledge across a broad range of subjects.

Our scientists in Y3 have been investigating rocks as part of their science work  and broad project – Tremors.

Year 4 have been developing their computing skills using scratch to create Roman invasion animations.

Year 5 are looking forward to their stargazing night next week – let’s hope we have some clear nights and the weather is not too cold.

They have headed off into space this week… wow…

Year 6 have been fully engrossed in their Medieval Madness project linking with Harry Potter.  Their art work has taken a new direction – using water colour to blend for effect.

We have opened our new computer suite this week and learning has been in full swing.

The children have been learning coding and programming through scratch. 

They have been using various aspects of Purple Mash to enhance their understanding.

Table Tennis Zone Finals

Table Tennis Zone Finals

Our Y6 team of 4 boys travelled to Bradford to take part in the Zone Finals. 

They worked tirelessly throughout the day and finished in 2nd place; this means that they have made it to the next stage – The Regional Finals, to be held on 3rd February in Blackburn.

We wish the team all the very best.

Week beginning 15-1-18

Year 3

Next week we will be continuing our learning on multiplication and division. We will further develop our ability to use written methods for multiplication alongside applying this knowledge to word problems and multiplication puzzles. 

Our science learning will focus on rocks. We will investigate the different types of rocks found in the Earth; carry out observational drawings and develop an understanding of how rocks are formed in the Earth.

Year 4

Year 4 will be continuing with their understanding of fractions and their equivalence.  Children are enjoying learning about raiders and settlers, next week we focus on the Roman invasion.  We will be researching and writing about life in the first century AD.  PE is on Wednesday and 4J go swimming on Monday afternoon.

Year 5

Our learning in maths next week will continue to focus on area and perimeter.  We will be solving more and more complex mastery problems to demonstrate our understanding. 

In science we will continue to learn about the movement of the Earth and Moon as well as the other planets in our solar system. 

In RE we will be studying the 5 pillars of Islam and how they impact on the daily life of Muslim families.

We have already seen some interesting homework projects and we are really pleased that you are enjoying our new theme. There is certainly lots to discover! 

Year 6

Next week in maths we will be carrying on working in our new classes to consolidate our understanding so far and to learn more about decimals and percentages.

During SFA lessons, we will be moving on to reading our new text: Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban and apply our reading skills to answer comprehension questions.

As historians we will be learning more about Tudors – particularly Henry VIII and his 6 wives.

We will also look forward to using watercolours to paint Harry Potter inspired images.

Week beginning 8-1-18

We hope that all of our staff and families have had a restful and enjoyable Christmas break. 

We look forward to welcoming everyone back to school at the normal time of 08:35 on Monday 8th January 2018.

Year 3

Next week we are looking forward to starting our new Tremors topic. Over the course of the topic we will be learning the locations of some of the biggest volcanoes around the world along with how they form and what happens when they erupt. We will also look at the history and geography of Pompeii and the results of the eruption that took place. 
 
We will also learn about the Earth’s structure and how this can cause earthquakes. Using our knowledge, later in the topic we will try and build some disaster proof shelters and volcano models.
 

Year 4

In our first week back Year 4 will be introduced to, ‘Raiders and Settlers’, a history based theme focusing on life in Britain through the invasion of the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and then the Vikings. They will gain a sense of chronology and learn about when people invaded us and where they came from.
In mathematics Year 4 start on fractions, decimals and percentages. In science they will begin to look at ‘States of Matter’.
4J will be swimming on the first Monday back after the holidays and PE will on Wednesday afternoon as usual.
 

Year 5

After a wonderful Christmas break, Year 5 will be beginning an exciting term of Space exploration!  We will begin by exploring the timeline of the space race and learning about the amazing astronauts involved and their achievements.  In our science lesson we will evaluate evidence to decide on the shape of the Earth, Moon and Sun.  We will then create and carry out an investigation to prove our theory.  Perimeter will be the focus of our maths learning this week; exploring composite rectilinear shapes.  We are looking forward to starting our second cycle of our SFA lessons and linking our writing to our new topic.
 
Our new home learning schedule will be accessible on the website under the homework tab.  Here you will find our new weekly spellings and the times table facts that will be tested on each Friday.  Additionally, their will be a list of suggested home work activities which could be completed.  
 

Year 6

In SFA, we’ll be continuing with writing our persuasive letters, moving on to the editing and publishing processes.

In maths, we will be recapping the four operations and exploring arithmetic and reasoning problems.

We will be beginning our new topic, ‘Medieval Madness’, and starting our art and d&t projects based around the Harry Potter series and mythical creatures.
